Sparklers Will Never Be Toothpicks
Jul. 6th, 2008 12:59 amWould it make sense for me to say that this past day was more enjoyable than Independence day itself? I had an incredible day today. What a perfect way to spend a Saturday!
Before she left for work, my mother had told me to do laundry things when I got up. Mind you, she was working at 6 AM this particular Saturday. So, of course, I was asleep when she told me to put things in the washer and fold what's in the dryer and prepare for my trip. I didn't hear her as I nodded my subconscious head and tumbled into an even deeper slumber. 10:50 AM came around the corner and I woke with a start, realizing that I had to get to the back before it closed at noon. Fortunately, the bank is biking distance from my house. I washed my face and made myself semi decent before rushing out of the door at 11:15. I need money for my trip. Can you blame me for wanting stuff? Got back around 11:40 and heard drums. I was immediately smacked in the face with the memory of there being a parade downtown arranged for today. Ah yes, the almighty parade which I haven't ever witnessed. Adam called me and asked if I wanted to go. Well, duh, there are instruments and people I know will be there and in the parade. Today seemed like a day where one has to spend it somewhere other than home. Funny how my mind works, then finally came the tiny subconscious me who said, "you have laundry to take care of." Shit... Adam was going to arrive in 10 minutes and I had to take the clean laundry out of the dryer, put it on the couch, go back, put what was in the washer in the dryer, put some fabric softener in it, and turn the dryer knob, and start it. How can I do that in 10 minutes and shower?
I managed to jump in the shower just as Adam knocked on my door. We walked to the parade and were a little late but things turned out. Avoiding people was impossible. For a short while, Adam and I were a part of the parade! We finally met up with Kelly and Matt at Matt's friend's house. Bradford called me and he came to find us. I told Kelly that I wanted to say hi to Bradford's girlfriend and others. So we weaved
around more people for about a block and met up with the rest of the party. The parade was quite long. It started at 1 PM (we got there at 1:15) and ended around 3:00 PM. After arriving at the destination we were at, I mentally agonized over the zillions of people we would have to encounter on our journey back to find Kelly and Matt. The parade ended and we were invited to come swim at my friend Raya's house. Raya's mother Ardelle was quite nice and said that we could invite anyone we wished. I contacted Kelly but she had other plans. Sae La Vie...
Bradford took Adam and I to our houses to get swimming gear and towels and then we ventured to pick up his mom and her famous lime boneless chicken. She needed help so we decided to assist.
Immediately upon arrival, swimsuits were changed into and we hit the water. I am a fish. I love the water. Everyone was present in the pool but Bradford. I, later, found out from Amanda that he was doing homework for his summer class. *grumble* Adam and I swam around and then Raya joined us. We were having great fun without Bradford anyway. Finally, at 5 PM, Bradford jumped in. We played random pool games like Shark Attack, flipped each other underwater, and jumped off the diving board. There was also a giant, yellow ball that everyone attempted to jump on. I decided not to participate in this endeavor because I figured I may as well stay away from danger at least for this moment. I have a trip in two days. I didn't want to go to New York with a busted skull. I am quite a mischief maker when I get my chance. My eyes kill from the chlorine.
Dinner consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, lime boneless chicken, two different coleslaws, pasta salad, and some other stuff. I had some pasta salad, baked beans, and a hot dog. Scrumptious... Desert consisted of strawberry ruhbarb pie, key lime pie, angel food cake, frozen strawberries, black berries, and cookies. I had a little of everything except for the angel food cake.
After dinner, we proceeded to the hot tub to see if it would help soothe our many mosquito bites. The water was so hot, about 100 degrees. Ted, Raya's boyfriend turned the temp down. I only managed to put my feet and legs in. After a bit of that, I went back into the pool with everyone but Adam. Adam didn't feel like getting wet again. So, he withdrew himself from the rest of us. Not to mention, he hates the cold and it was mid evening.
We were reminded about the time of when the fireworks started. But all of us were freezing cold from the pool. So we paraded back into the hot tub which was now significantly more bearable. We sat there until 8:24 PM and then was forced out to change and leave for the fireworks.
We trudged out of the house at 8:45 and the fireworks weren't supposed to start till 9 something. It was quite a long walk. We had to go a route that not many of us have traveled before during the night time. It was in the woods. At first glance, everyone thought it was a shady place to be at 9 PM. The fireworks started and we all ran. Our 8 member group shattered into two groups, one of 3 (Bradford, Amanda, and me) and the other of 5 (Adam, Jessie, Missy, Ted, and Raya). Adam and I have phones with flashlights so we had to split up. How sucky! We held hands up till we went into the woods though. *wink* He even sight guided me while I was resting my eyes... What a sweetheart. We got to a clearing and saw the most amazing fireworks that my town has ever put on. I never see fireworks and usually they're halfway decent when I do get a chance. I took some video footage. Before we all knew it, it was over. The finale kind of sucked and all of us were eaten to death by the hungry mosquitos.
The walk back was not so bad. There were a lot of people on bicycles. So we stopped every time they approached behind us. They'd scream, "to your left!" and pedal onward. Would it have been amusing if I was with a cane and gave them a hard time on purpose? I'm too mean.... Ha ha. We were nearing the beginning of the woods trail and no one told me that there was a dip in the path. I tripped on it and almost re-sprained my ankle again. *sigh* Joints are seriously useless.... I guess once it's screwed, it's always screwed. I hope this doesn't happen at GDF. 45 minutes was spent entirely on walking back.
In Raya's house, four of us shared a Ginger Ale. How amusing... Then we were setting up sparklers and popping things. At the end, we lit up the box full of burnt out sparklers and poppy things. It was an awesome blaze! We were like, "Oh shit!" every time a car passed by, the poppy things exploding beneath the wheels.
Everything was finally over and it was past 11 PM. Bradford dropped his mom off and then we picked up some bottle rockets at Adam's house. We gathered in my backyard with my mother and my sister and set them off. I gave my sister the sparklers and poppy things that Bradford let me have. We managed to go through a lot of them. I put the wire part of the sparkler in my mouth to see if I could hold it in my teeth. I did it for a couple seconds before I feared I might burn my face off and took it out of my mouth. Stupid move! Yes, my infamy! After all the racket we made, I decided to let them go home. My mother was about to go to bed so I couldn't let them stay. We took random pictures of the fun we had and Bradford and Amanda got some pretty crazy couple shots.
I wish all days were like this. Mere fun and games with an overwhelming amount of food.
One good thought, one bad thought time!
Good: Leaving for GDF in a day and 7 hours.... Totally psyched.....
Bad: I smell like bug spray and itch really bad, but can't take a shower because everyone is asleep.
Oh well, life goes on.
Tomorrow, tomorrow!
