Snap, Crackle, Pop
Jun. 20th, 2008 07:52 pmKellogg's Rice Krispie cereal has such an appropriate catch phrase for adolescents who are attempting to break away from their parents and grab their independence. So, I had an opportunity to possibly meet Johnny Depp today. It's still there, waiting for me to take it, but I'm trapped in a house on a Friday night. Why is everything an oxymoron for a parent?
I am allowed to be a counselor for a week-long overnight camp in Chicago and gallivant around the city during the day when I'm not needed. But I am not allowed to spend one night alone with a friend in Chicago to meet an international celebrity. I am allowed to visit Chicago and nearly get mugged on an El train. But I am not allowed to cross the street from Ogalvie Transportation Center to Union station to see a movie being filmed.
I find it slightly embarrassing to complain. Yet this journal's purpose is to write what's on my mind.
Here is the story.
Sarah called me last night, Thursday, to see if I can possibly accompany her to Chicago because Johnny Depp was filming Public Enemies very close and in the city. How many times does he travel to Illinois? Given, her phone call was way last minute and I wasn't able to ask my parents because she didn't have the details for the trip. She said she would call me back before Friday. I went to Taekwondo thinking she would call and leave me a message. That call never came. I texted her around 1:30 AM to see what was going on. She responded with an "I don't know. Maybe no." That said, I figured it wasn't happening. Friday, today, arrived and I was hanging out with Kelly. Sarah texted me and asked if I still wanted to go and said she could. Grah! When is she going to be sure?
She explained on Thursday that we would take the 9 PM train from my town to Chicago on Friday night. We'd arrive around 10:35 PM perhaps a little later. We'd then walk over to the set and watch filming progress. Sarah said that there is no garentee but she knew that Johnny was coming. Her friend is an extra in the movie. The shady part of this entire night is the waiting. We don't know when he'll show up. It could be anytime from 2 AM through 6 AM. However, once we get there around 11 PM, we wouldn't immediately take the next available 12:10 AM train back. That would be idiotic and a waste of nearly two hours on the train to get there in the first place. So, we'd have to wait until 8:30 AM at the train station on Saturday to go home. All of this for a maybe, possible encounter with Johnny Depp. Next shady part, we would be accompanied by a woman Sarah had met online named Jamie. I don't know Jamie. Sarah barely knows Jamie. Yet Jamie will be our guide. 6 to 8 hours with Jamie doesn't sound all that appealing. It is indeed another chance to meet a new person. But I'm kind of iffy.
So, today I asked my father after Sarah called me for the second time asking if I can go. My father asked my mother and they both agreed that I wasn't to go. Okay, so I'm not overly thrilled about waiting for someone who may not show. But it's still a night travel experience. I've never traveled to Chicago at night before. It's foreign to me. <Sigh>
I wish I was allowed off the leash for once. Even if it is something I'm not overly excited about. I want my independence and my own decisions.
A little more than two weeks until I leave for GDF! <Jumps around>
In other news, I am going to see the Show of Shows tomorrow. It's something I'm sure I'll never forget for the rest of my life. 9 drum and bugle corps from around the midwest are going to be performing. I know people from two of those corps.
Blue Stars - LaCrosse, WI
Capital Sound - Madison, WI
Carolina Crown - Ft. Mill, SC
The Cavaliers - Rosemont, IL (Kevin N. - Trumpetline, was the drum major for the NIU Huskie Marching band this past year when I was participating in it, incredible musician)
Colt Cadets - Dubuque, IA
Colts - Dubuque, IA
Madison Scouts - Madison, WI
Phantom Regiment - Rockford, IL
Racine Scouts - Racine, WI (Dan D. - Trumpetline, a freshman I met in marching band last fall, really involved, excellent musician)
Hopefully, they'll let me in with my camcorder. I will watch and engulf everything like it's the last thing I do.
Next, Summer in the City 2008 session 2 camp for students with visual impairments starts on Sunday. I was recruited as a chaperon/escort. Wow, it feels so strange returning as someone with authority rather than a camper. I'm old. This is my 7th summer returning.
I've written a lot yet again. <chuckle>
P.S. A huge congratulations to J & A for their soon to be marriage tomorrow afternoon in West Holywood, CA. I am super happy for you! Much love from Chungie!
